Division leaders emerge after busy Mid South Conference weekend

FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 7, 2024) – A busy weekend for the USYS National League included lots of game action in Mississippi and Tennessee, where more than 80 matches in the Mid South Conference saw teams take big steps toward capturing division titles.

Among the many influential games in the Premier 1 divisions, a handful included the top two teams in the standings competing for a chance to take firm control of the title race. The first-place finishers in the Premier 1 divisions of the Mid South Conference will secure berths to the 2025 USYS Southern Regional Championships, as well as automatic qualification for the next season’s USYS National League Quarterfinals.

One of the top-of-the-table matchups came in the 14U Boys age group, where Chattanooga FC 11B Navy needed to come from behind to win a 10-goal thriller in a game that the team had on its radar throughout the fall.

“The boys knew all season that this would be an important matchup to be No. 1 in the Mid South this season,” Chattanooga FC coach Dalton Healy said. “They were excited to play in this rematch before heading to the Quarterfinals in Phoenix this December. The parents were thrilled that the boys kept playing hard, even from behind, and that all of their training paid off. We all knew winning this match would lead to securing the No. 1 spot.”

Recap some of the key matches from the weekend:

14U Boys: Chattanooga FC 11B Navy (TN) 6-4 IFC 11B Premier (MS)

This match didn’t lack for goals or drama, as Chattanooga FC prevailed in a back-and-forth encounter on Saturday. After a scoreless opening 15 minutes, IFC’s Xavian Owens and Joseph Ketchum opened the flood gates by finding the back of the net to put the Mississippi side up 2-0. Zane Shaffer replied for Chattanooga by netting a brace to tie the game at 2-2 after 30 minutes. That score line lasted just one minute before Joshua Marchant scored to put IFC back in front, 3-2, in the closing minutes of the half.

Shortly after halftime, Austin Bradley pulled Chattanooga level once again, and Sammy Jimenez Renteria’s 47th-minute strike gave the Tennessee side its first lead of the game. However, Marchant scored his second of the day a few minutes later to tie the game at 4-4.

Bradley became the third player to record a brace, as his second tally gave Chattanooga a 5-4 lead in the 54th minute, and Byron Bernabe added an insurance goal in the 61st minute to seal the thrilling 6-4 win. The victory, combined with the weekend’s other results, helped Chattanooga secure a first-place finish in the 14U Boys Premier 1 division.

15U Boys: New Orleans DFC 10B (LA) 1-2 IFC 10B Premier (MS)

After conceding early, IFC fought back and scored two late goals to capture a 2-1 victory against New Orleans DFC on Saturday. The head-to-head win in the matchup of unbeatens allowed IFC to clinch a first-place finish in the 15U Boys Premier 1 division.

New Orleans came out on the front foot and took a 1-0 lead in just the second minute when Gilbert Urbina found the back of the net. That goal stood for more than an hour of game time, as New Orleans maintained a lead in both the match and the division standings.

However, Bryson Sistrunk pulled IFC level with a 65th-minute goal to set up a tense finish. The tension turned to excitement for IFC, as Jonathan Foster Batson netted a game winner in the final minutes of regulation to give IFC a crucial victory in the top-of-the-table clash.

16U Girls: Kononia Lady Fire 09/10G (TN) 0-1 MSC Lakers Elite 09G (LA)

MSC continued its unblemished start to its National League season by securing a 1-0 win against Kononia Lady Fire on Saturday. Greta Raymond supplied the game’s lone goal, as her strike gave MSC the victory to remain on top of the 16U Girls Premier 1 division standings.

MSC has yet to concede a goal, as each of its opening three wins have come in shutout fashion. There is still plenty of soccer to be played, but the Louisiana side has positioned itself well to contend for the division title with its fast start to the season.

“It is imperative to get results early on in Mid South league play,” said MSC coach Tony Judice. “The competition is so good that we don’t want to put our fate in the opponents’ hands. The team’s goal is to win Regionals and play at the National Championships. If we win Mid South, that’s one step closer to our dream.”

MSC Lakers Elite 09G (LA)
17U Boys: TUSC 08B (TN) 2-4 Pateadores SC Nashville 08B Blue (TN)

Pateadores clinched a first-place finish in the 17U Boys Premier 1 division thanks to two wins over the weekend, highlighted by a vital 4-2 victory against second-place TUSC on Saturday.

Both sides entered the match having won every prior contest, so the stage was set for a hugely influential 90 minutes in the title race. Pateadores needed just three minutes to grab a lead behind a Jac Canepari goal, but TUSC’s Miguel Fuentes equalized in the ninth minute. The frantic opening continued when Nathan Krall scored in the 13th minute to put Pateadores back in front.

After the scoring calmed down, Brendan Medina extended Pateadores’ lead to 3-1 with a goal early in the second half. Krall added some insurance with his second goal of the game before Jaxon Wayland pulled a goal back for TUSC in the 85th minute. That’s as close as the score got, as Pateadores outlasted their in-state foe to take all three points — sending Pateadores on their way to securing the division title.

19U Boys: BRSC 07/06B Black (LA) 1-3 NUSA 07B Maroon (TN)

NUSA moved to the top of the table in the 19U Boys Premier 1 division with a 3-1 win on Sunday against previous group leader BRSC. Johnny Molina opened the scoring in the 25th minute, as he put NUSA in front. Thang Piang doubled the advantage with a 30th-minute strike before Marcus Couhig pulled a goal back for BRSC shortly before the break.

NUSA remained organized in defense throughout the second half, and a 72nd-minute insurance goal from Piang helped to secure the 3-1 win that helped the Tennessee side move to 5-0-0 on the season.

Several titles secured as Mid South Conference fall season winds down

FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 19, 2023) — Standout teams have risen to the top of the standings in the Mid South Conference of the USYS National League following several busy weeks of the Fall 2023 season that saw 350 games played across Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

The fall season included events in Huntsville, Ala., Jackson, Miss., Gulfport, Miss., and Memphis, Tenn., as teams in the boys’ divisions sought to capture the top spots in the standings. Meanwhile, most of the girls’ standings in the Mid South Conference will be decided when play concludes in the spring.

Teams play for top spots in each National League Conference, which provide qualification opportunities for next season’s National League Conference Playoffs, as well as their respective 2024 USYS Regional Championships.

Take a look at some of the Mid South Conference division races as the fall season winds down…

13U Girls Premier II
Brandon FC RSC 11 Girls Premier (MS) is currently in first place, but Union 10 FC 2011 (AL) and Auburn Soccer Club 2011G Blue (AL) are one point behind Brandon. Union 10 and Auburn play Nov. 4, and that game will decide the division title and which team is promoted into Premier I for the spring.

13U Boys Premier II
In the inaugural year for the 13U Premier II Division, IFC 2011 Boys Red (MS) is currently top of the table, having gone undefeated so far in the league schedule. However, if MS Rush 11B Premier wins their game vs IFC on November 2nd, it would lead to a three-way tie at the top of the division, so there is still a lot to play for! The winner of the division will be promoted to the Premier I Division for the spring season.

14U Girls Premier I
Mandeville Girls Lakers Elite 2010 (LA) had a strong fall season, as it went 6-1-0 to move to the top of the standings. However, Lady Lobos Rush 2010 (TN) can match Mandeville’s 18 points by winning each of its three remaining games during the spring season. Should that happen, Lobos Rush would finish in first place thanks to its 2-1 win when the two sides played in September.

14U Boys Premier I
A matchup this Sunday will have a big impact on the top of the standings, as the division title has yet to be secured. First-place USC 10 Boys Premier (AL) will take on NOW FC Boys 2010 (AL), which is currently just three points back and in second place. The result of this game could decide the group winner.

14U/15U Girls Premier II
MS Rush United 09G Elite (MS) and Tupelo FC 2010 Girls (MS) are tied for first place in the division with identical 5-0-1 records. They have yet to face each other, and that result will determine which side finishes on top of the standings.

14U/15U Boys Premier II
With promotion to the Premier I Division on the line, MSC Boys Lakers Elite 2009 (LA) claimed the top spot in the standings with a decisive string of victories. The Lakers went undefeated, as they scored 25 goals in six games and conceded just once.

15U Boys Premier I
Stones River FC 09 Black (TN) has compiled five wins and a draw, putting it at the top of table with just one game remaining. Any points from its contest this Saturday will allow it to clinch the spot over second-place Louisiana Fire 09 Red (LA), which has concluded its season and is level on points with SRFC. The two sides tied when they played earlier this season, and both have secured spots in the National League Conference Playoffs next season as top-two finishers in the Mid South Conference.

15U Girls Premier I
Kononia SC Lady Fire (TN) and MS Rush 09G Premier are the early pace setters in this division, with both teams accumulating three wins and one draw in the fall season. It will be interesting to see if their early lead holds up when the Mid South Girls season concludes in the springtime.

16U Boys Premier I
A tight race at the top of the standings saw Pateadores SC Nashville 08B (TN) clinch the division title, as the Tennessee side won all seven of its games with a plus-27 goal differential. In-state foe Germantown Legends 08 Black NL (TN) finished three points back in second place, losing only to Pateadores. Both teams qualified for next season’s Conference Playoffs with their top-two finishes.

16U Girls Premier I
With most of the division scheduled to compete in the spring time, MS Rush 08G Premier has wasted no time in jumping out of the gates, winning both their Mid South games in the Fall season with a goal difference of +10. There is still all to play for in the spring season to determine who will eventually be the division champion and earn their spot at Southern Regionals!

16U Boys Premier II
The top of the standings is still to be decided with just a few games left to be played. Auburn Soccer Club 08 Boys (AL) has played all of its games and is currently in first place, but Pateadores SC Nashville 08 Yellow (TN) could eclipse Auburn with a win in its final game.

16U/17U Girls Premier II
USC 08G Premier (AL) and Auburn SC 07G (AL) are tied for first place in the division, as each side has won five games and drawn once. They will play each other on Nov. 11 to decide the division title and promotion into the Premier I Division for next season.

17U Boys Premier I
NUSA 07 Boys Maroon (TN) has clinched the division title after compiling a 5-0-1 record in the fall season. NUSA will be joined in next season’s Conference Playoffs by Germantown Legends Premier 07 (TN), which narrowly held off Union 10 FC 07 (AL) by one point to claim second place.

17U Girls Premier I
BVB 07 G Yellow Elite (LA) has followed up their impressive run this past summer at the 2023 Southern Regionals by starting off the Mid South season with a 3-1-1 record. With the majority of the season left to be played in the spring, will BVB’s fall season success be enough to earn them the division title.

17U/18U Boys Premier II
The current standings have New Orleans DFC 06B (LA) in the top spot thanks to a thrilling 6-4 victory against Slidell SC 06B Storm Elite (LA), which finished level on points with New Orleans. Union 10 FC 2006 Boys (AL) has one game remaining, and a victory would create a three-way tie at the top of the table with the two Louisiana sides.

18U/19U Bosy Premier II
Mandeville SC Boys Lakers Elite 2005 (LA) won the division title by securing wins in each of its five games and conceding no goals.

19U Boys Premier I
Lobos Rush 05/06 Premier (TN) completed its conference season with a 6-1-0 record, which has it at the top of the standings. However, second-place MS Rush United 05/06B Premier (MS) has a game in hand and could claim the division title with a victory in that contest.

19U Girls Premier I
NUSA 06G Maroon (TN) has followed up last seasons success in Mid South and National League P.R.O. by jumping out to an early lead in the division, winning both their games while not conceding a goal. Hattiesburg HFC Storm 06G (MS) has also won both their games, only trailing NUSA on goal difference.

Mid South Conference taking shape midway through Fall 2022 season

FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 11, 2022) – The US Youth Soccer (USYS) Mid South Conference held another busy successful weekend of play in Tennessee and Mississippi, as numerous teams continued their push for a conference title.

Teams in the Premier I Division are looking to capitalize on their strong seasons with the opportunity to advance to the 2023 USYS Southern Regional Championships and earn automatic qualification for the 2023-24 season of National League P.R.O.

Some notes on the girls’ season:

Mississippi Rush United 06G Premier (MS) started its quest to repeat as conference champions with two decisive wins in the 17U Premier I Division. The Mississippi side earned a 4-0 win over Union 10 FC 2006 Girls (TX-N) on Saturday and followed that up with an emphatic shutout victory over North Alabama SC Gravity Girls 06 (AL) on Sunday.

“We have a great group of kids and parents who are dedicated to what we are doing – and love each other,” said Mississippi Rush coach Murry Noble. “They have helped change the mold of Mississippi Rush soccer in the way we operate on a day-to-day basis. I’m very happy to see them rewarded for their hard work over the past 18 months.”

Noble also talked about the competition level his team has faced.

“The Mid South Conference is always great competition, especially in the 2006 group,” he said. “Last year it proved to be an extremely competitive group, with only a few points separating the teams top to bottom. It’s been a great experience for the girls to get high level games to help us grow collectively.”

Mississippi Rush United 06G Premier (MS) will have a break before its next Mid South Conference matchup in late November.

Some notes on the boys’ season:

Germantown Legends 05 Black (TN) continued its impressive start to the season with another strong performance in the 18 Boys Premier I Division. The Tennessee side had picked up two wins to start its campaign in early September and made sure to continue that momentum with a 1-0 win over Mississippi Rush United 05B Premier (MS) on Sunday.

“The Mid South Conference is a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against some of the top teams in our region,” Germantown coach Phil McDonnell said. “Over the years of playing in Mid South Conference, we’ve become familiar with many of these teams and so it’s created some competitive rivalries. These matches challenge us as players and coaches and help us continuously improve.”

Germantown Legends 05 Black (TN) sits one point behind group leaders Tennessee SC Murfreesboro 2005 (TN) with a game in hand — and the two sides will square off this week in a pivotal matchup.

McDonnell said the quality of play in the Mid South Conference helps prepare teams for other competitions, such as State Cup, Regionals and National League P.R.O. This year’s Germantown 05 team is taking it one game at a time and focusing on details, but excited for what the future may hold.

“This is a very special season for us,” McDonnell said. “Over the past four years, we’ve sent six players to MLS academy teams and lost another to an illness. Five of those seven players have returned to our team for this last year together, so we are playing with a lot of confidence and cohesion.

“Every time we step onto the field, we know we can compete with anyone. This is a selfless group of guys who have bought into our system and it’s really coming together.”

The Mid South Conference is one of 13 conferences in the USYS National League. Action in the Mid South Conference will continue throughout the year with teams inching closer to earning qualification into National League P.R.O. or a spot at the 2023 USYS Southern Regional Championships.
