An undefeated showing by Columbus United G11 Lions (OH) at the December Quarterfinals included a plus-nine goal differential by way of 10 goals scored and only one allowed. Stony Brook Force G11 (NY-E) and Maryland Rush Azzurri 11G (MD) also enjoyed successful weekends in December, and both sides proved they are cable of winning in different ways. The Eastern New York side gave up only one goal during its three games, while the Maryland side scored nine during its three-game slate.

A determined defensive effort from Madison 56ers Elite 64 11G (WI) led to three wins and the champions pool crown during the January Quarterfinals. The 56ers didn’t allow a single goal during its time in Mesa, proving it is a difficult side to break down.

Wildcard Pool

West-Mont United Elite 64 11G (PA-E) played three tight games at the January Quarterfinals to show it can hang with anyone, and consecutive shutout wins will give them confidence heading to the Semifinals. The Eastern Pennsylvania side will be a battle-tested team in Round Rock.

Three convincing wins for Saints 11B Blue Premier (OR) at the December Quarterfinals has the Oregon side positioned well with Round Rock in its sights. All three victories were shutouts, and the Saints added nine goals throughout the weekend in Mesa, too.

Ponys F.C. 2011 (IL) also won its group in December amid some tough competition. The Illinois side went 2-1-0 and saved its biggest win for last, so they are rounding into form at the right time. Rhode Island Surf B11 Elite Blue (RI) lost a close game to Ponys during their first group play match in Mesa and finished just behind them on goal differential. Surf picked up two shutout victories to close the event, so they will have something to prove this week.

Never count out Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 11B (NJ). The New Jersey side completed an improbable four-goal comeback in the champions pool final at the January Quarterfinals and will still be riding that momentum in Round Rock. No lead is safe against them.

Wildcard Pool

Spire FC Elite 64 11B (OH) brought its shooting boots to Mesa during the January Quarterfinals. The Ohio side’s eight goals during its run in the wildcard pool helped it qualify for Round Rock, and Spire will aim to continue its high-scoring performances.

With its plus-16 goal differential, Columbus United G10 Lions (OH) led the three undefeated group winners at the December Quarterfinals. The Ohio side’s prolific attack averaged more than five goals per game, and the defense held its opponents scoreless in Mesa. A decisive run at the January Quarterfinals led to the champions pool title for Elmbrook United 10G Elite 64 (WI). The Wisconsin side’s strong showing was headlined by a 6-0 result in its first game, and it will look to keep building off of that this week in Texas.

Wildcard Pool

With five goals in each of its final two games during the January Quarterfinals, Midwest United FC Score Elite 64 10G (MI) heads to Round Rock as a team that defenses will want to take seriously.

Champions Pool

Sixteen goals across its three wins in the December Quarterfinals showed that TKO Premier SC 10B Blue (MI) is firing on all cylinders. Winning its group in dominant fashion should keep opposing defenses on their toes in Round Rock.

Reigning National Champions Ponys F.C. 2011 (IL) also went undefeated en route to winning their group in December and should get everyone’s best shot this time around. They carry over much of the form that led them to the national title after registering a plus-11 goal differential in Mesa.

Michigan Stars 10B Academy (MI) was one more team in good form at the December Quarterfinals. It set the stage with a 5-0 win during its first game and never looked back. Look for the Stars to try and make a point early again in Round Rock.

Silver Pool

Whatever it takes to win. That’s what Indy Premier Elite 64 10B (IN) did during the January Quarterfinals to book its spot in Round Rock. With three narrow wins that included two shutouts and a penalty shootout, Indy Premier won’t be an easy team to beat.

Wildcard Pool

Club Ohio National 10B (OH) made a statement at the January Quarterfinals. In its four-game run through the wildcard pool, the Ohio side scored 18 goals – including three straight games with more than five. They’ll hope to stay that clinical at the Semifinals.

Each team had two of its games decided by one goal, so they will be ready for close games at the Semifinals.

December Quarterfinal group winners Washington Rush B08 NL (WA) and Kansas Rush Academy B08 (KS) both left Mesa unblemished and with plus-12 goal differentials. Expect to see plenty of goals scored when they’re on the field in Round Rock.

Utah Celtic 08B E64 Bradley (UT) also won its group in Mesa. The Utah side has won two straight National Championships, so this team is no stranger to rising up to the big moments. This is another team that can score goals in a hurry and does so often.

Silver Pool

A threat in the silver pool, Stony Brook Wildlings Blue B08 (NY-E) is no stranger to this stage. The Eastern New York side has been to the National Championships and will make defenses pay for their mistakes. The Wildlings will look to rise to the stakes that the Semifinals bring.

Wildcard Pool

One of the best offensive performances of the January Quarterfinals came from Spire FC Elite 64 08B (OH). Champions Pool

Midwest United FC SCOR 06/07 Black (MI) was one of the most convincing group winners at the December Quarterfinals. With a plus-14 goal differential and two games of six goals or more, the Michigan side proved they can score early and often.

Toca FC 06/07G Elite (KS) and TKO Premier SC 06/07G Blue (MI) also came out on top of their respective groups, and close results for the two Midwest teams may mean exciting games in Round Rock.

Total team efforts were the key for Madison 56ers Elite 64 06/07G (WI) winning the champions pool at the January Quarterfinals. Led by a stifling defense and offense that took its chances, the Wisconsin side should head to Mesa with confidence if it can play its style again.

Wildcard Pool

It took one game during the January Quarterfinals, but MI Rangers FC Elite 64 06/07G (MI) figured out the formula for success. A tough penalty shootout loss in its first game was a distant memory after the Michigan side racked up 7-0 and 4-0 wins to close out the weekend in Mesa. They’ll be trouble for opponents if that form carries over to Round Rock.

The two sides — who are both reigning National Champions — will take the next stop in reclaiming their crown at the Semifinals.

USYS National League introduces new event formats

Updated competition structures will begin in the 2025-26 season;
The National League Cup to debut in Spring 2026

PDF: Event FOrmat Details

FRISCO, Texas (Feb. 7, 2025) – The US Youth Soccer National League is excited to announce updated event formats that will begin in the 2025-26 season, including the introduction of The National League Cup.

Over the past six months, US Youth Soccer established a National League working group that reviewed a survey conducted by the National League of all its clubs and teams. The feedback from the teams, college coaches and club leaders led to the formation of new event structures that meet the needs of the youth soccer landscape. The new National League event structures were developed with a focus on simplifying the competition formats, elevating the level of play, and maintaining advancement opportunities that adapt to future evolutions to the overall US Youth Soccer competitions.

The changes result in two national competition formats within the National League — updated Winter Events and The National League Cup (The NL Cup).

“The US Youth Soccer National League is committed to introducing new event formats designed to enhance competition, provide meaningful development opportunities, and create the best possible experience for players, teams and clubs,” USYS Chief Soccer Officer Tom Condone said. “These innovative formats will elevate the level of play while maintaining a clear pathway for advancement within the evolving landscape of youth soccer.”

WINTER EVENTS

The National League Winter Events are a modification to simplify the current structure of quarterfinal events and semifinal events. As with the current event structure, the winter events will provide teams with an opportunity to earn their place into the summer’s USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

Winter events will be open to National League teams in the 14U-19U Boys and Girls age groups, with competing teams selected via an application process. Within each age group, 40 total teams will be split among two events, and each team will play in one event.

At each event, teams will be divided into five groups of four, and each team will play its three group opponents over three days. Teams that finish in first place in their four-team group will advance to the USYS National Championships as a National League representative.

Additionally, teams that finish in second place in their four-team group at the winter events will earn a spot into The NL Cup at the end of that season.

The newly formatted winter events will kick off in November 2025 and January 2026, during the winter portion of the 2025-26 seasonal year.

THE NL CUP

This new, streamlined competition format will offer teams the opportunity of a postseason competition and will be exclusive to National League teams, highlighting the top competition in the league. Qualification will take place on a same-season basis, with teams earning placement directly from their performance in regular season league competition.

“Over 75 percent of National League club leaders indicated they wanted a league cup established, and many aspects of The NL Cup format highlight factors that club leaders rated as very important,” said Marc Frankland, National League General Manager. “We are very excited about this new competition desired by a majority of our clubs, which gives teams advancement opportunities into a true National League postseason.”

Winners of National League Tier 1 Divisions, in both club-based and team-based leagues, will earn automatic qualification into The NL Cup. The remaining spots in The NL Cup will be filled by the teams that qualify for the competition through their performance at the winter events.

The first stage of The NL Cup — The NL Cup Playoffs — will feature four events and take place in late May or June.

At each playoff event, eight boys teams and eight girls teams in their respective 13U-19U age group will compete in a group play format with three games over three days. Each age group will have two groups of four teams, with the winner of each four-team group advancing to The NL Cup Finals.

The NL Cup Finals will feature eight teams — the two group winners from each of the four playoff events — in each of the 13U-19U age groups for both boys and girls. Teams will play three games in three days in a bracket format, where games progress from quarterfinals to semifinals to the finals — in which The NL Cup champions will be determined.

The NL Cup will debut in Spring 2026 at the end of the 2025-26 seasonal year.

BEHIND THE CHANGES

The updates to the National League’s event structures stemmed from deliberate consideration of feedback provided by club directors, coaches, players, parents and college coaches.

A collaboration between USYS staff and the USYS National League working group — which includes representatives from youth clubs, USYS State Associations, the USYS Board of Directors and USYS staff — allowed the new event structures to be developed with input and attention from all involved.

What they’re saying:

“The transformation of the USYS National League events creates a fantastic environment for players, families, and college coaches. This evolution provides a competitive atmosphere with multiple advancement opportunities and recruitable moments. This will truly be the best of the best of individual teams competing for The NL Cup and advancing to the USYS National Championships. I am excited and honored to be a part of the future of National League and US Youth Soccer.”
Jonathan Berzins | Arizona Soccer Association & NL Working Group Chair

“We are excited about both the evolution of the National League and the introduction of The National League Cup. It represents a great opportunity within the National League platform and allows our members to compete against some of the best teams in the country. Pairing this high level of competition with an increased focus on college exposure will be very beneficial to all.”
Brian Waltrip | Los Angeles Soccer Club

“We are very excited for the transformation of National League winter events and the addition of The National League Cup.  These events expose our teams and players to a high level of soccer while giving them opportunities to play against some of the top National League teams in the country.”
Catey Stewart | Charlotte Soccer Academy

“The new USYS National League event platforms provide an incredible opportunity for our players to compete at the highest level, gain national exposure, and develop both on and off the field. The existing and new platforms will continue to create an environment where talent is challenged, growth is encouraged, and college and professional pathways are made more accessible. At Cedar Stars Academy, we are proud to be part of a system that truly prioritizes player development and provides the tools necessary for long-term success.”
Kieran Patrick | Cedar Stars Academy North

“With this evolution of the National League and the introduction of the new National League Cup, these opportunities carve out something truly special in the crowded youth soccer landscape — a real promotion system through BOTH team and club-based platforms, where participation in it is determined by performance on the field, not by the name on your jersey. Whether you’re from a major club or a local community-based organization, if your team is strong and your on-field performance deems you worthy, you can earn your spot in the National League or National League Cup to compete against other great teams from throughout the county. These adjustments reduce travel and costs for families, foster more meaningful local competitions, and give successful teams the opportunity to compete in national events, which is the model most clubs are looking for in youth soccer today.”
Chris Jamrozy | Illinois Youth Soccer

“The new USYS National League events format creates a true ‘#EarnYourPlace’ platform for both our club based, and team-based leagues. By creating a more regional model, we have attained our goal of reducing costs and placing more emphasis on the importance of league play for advancement. The new platform is also created with flexibility, so that we can continue to grow the events and genuinely provide a championship atmosphere for the deserving and a truly recruitable competition regionally and nationally. I am excited to see the platform in its current form, see what it will become in the near and distant future!”
Joe Burger | Kansas Youth Soccer

Schedule announced for 2025 NL Semifinals in Round Rock

FRISCO, Texas (Jan. 24, 2025) — The game schedule is now available for the USYS National League Semifinals taking place Feb. 21-25 in Round Rock, Texas.

View Game Schedule

At the semifinals, teams will be competing for a chance to advance to the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life, as each gender will see six teams per age group qualify for Nationals during the event.

“All of the teams preparing to compete in Round Rock showed their abilities through strong performances at the quarterfinals, and we cannot wait for the best of the National League to come together to play meaningful, high-level games,” said Marc Frankland, USYS National League General Manager. “This is a truly unique competition in the youth soccer landscape, featuring both club-based and team-based competitors, and having spots to the National Championships on the line will only add to the excitement.”

The action in Texas will include teams representing 32 different USYS State Associations, led by Michigan with 29 teams. The field of competing teams will feature five defending USYS National Champions looking to get one step closer to defending their titles.

Teams playing in Round Rock are divided into pools within each age group, with pool placement based on performance from the quarterfinal events earlier this season. The Champions Pool features the top-performing teams, followed by the Silver Pool and then the Wildcard Pool. Visit the event homepage to view a breakdown of the pools.

The semifinals feature a primarily tournament/bracket style schedule. In Round Rock, all age groups will see four teams qualify for the National Championships directly from the Champions Pool. The Silver Pool will qualify one team to the National Championships, and the Wildcard Pool will qualify one team to the National Championships. MESA, Ariz. (Jan. 21, 2025) — Five exciting days of action at the USYS National League Quarterfinals in Mesa, Ariz., saw 45 boys teams qualify for the February 2025 National League Semifinals, while six sides claimed titles as the winners of the champions pool in their age group.

This January quarterfinals featured primarily teams from Elite 64, the top club-based platform in the USYS National League. The Jan. 17-21 action took place at Arizona Athletic Grounds and featured more than 160 boys teams across the 13U-19U age groups.

For the 14U-19U age groups, the quarterfinals represent the first of two stages of National League events, which provide every competing team with a pathway to ultimately advance to the USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life. The 45 teams that earned advancement to the next stage — the National League Semifinals — will play Feb. 22-25 in Round Rock, Texas, for a chance to qualify to the National Championships.

“It’s very fun playing in this environment,” City SC Utah Elite 64 09B (UT) midfielder Nash Lassig said after his team clinched a spot in the National League Semifinals. “You get more experience, like going different places, playing different styles of the game. It feels good to be able to advance. I know we’re very excited to go and play for a spot in Nationals.”

Ten different USYS State Associations saw teams advance to the February semifinals, led by New Jersey with 11 teams. Kansas, Ohio and Wisconsin followed, as they each had six teams advance.

In addition to earning a place in the semifinals, six teams also won the tournament competition within the champions pool of their respective age groups to claim event titles. Cedar Stars Academy led the way, as it was the lone club to capture multiple champions pool titles this weekend.

PDA Hibernian Elite 64 12B (NJ) coach James Angiolino said his team earned valuable experience into learning how to play on the road in different environments and noted that winning their champions pool final in penalties will make the travel home a little sweeter.

“We played teams from Illinois, Utah and the top-ranked team from Kansas today,” Angiolino said. “This is what we want. We want the best competition. We’re not looking for 5-0. We’re looking for 2-1 or 3-2 — that’s what’s going to make our guys better.”

TITLE GAME RECAPS…

13U Boys
PDA Hibernian Elite 64 12B’s (NJ) furious second half comeback propelled its 2-2 (3-0 PK) win over Toca FC 12B Elite 64 (KS) in the 13U Boys champions pool final. George Wallace put Toca in front in the fifth minute, and Levi Hayes doubled the lead just six minutes later to give the Kansas side firm control throughout the rest of the first half. An impassioned halftime speech amongst PDA set the stage for the rest of this game, though. The New Jersey side put on a full-out attack and was rewarded when Dominic Multari’s 39th-minute goal brought his team within one. PDA continued to ramp up the pressure and ultimately found the equalizer in the 52nd minute from Bennett Cucchiara, sending the two teams to penalties. In the shootout, PDA keeper Matthew Angiolino saved all three of Toca’s kicks to drive his New Jersey side to a win.

14U Boys
An improbable comeback for Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 11B (NJ) in the 14U Boys champions pool final stunned Toca FC 11B Elite 64 (KS) and those watching. The Kansas side got out to a dominant start behind two quick goals from Tristan Zimmermann and Emyr Vargas and then added to its lead in the 27th minute once more with a Tripp Walters goal. Down by three, Cedar Stars took complete control of the game the rest of the way to fuel its storybook win. Kaleb Kelly put his team on the scoreboard just before halftime, and Lucas Donnelly added a second just three minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to one. Cedar Stars continued to create chances and found the leveler in the 51st minute behind a Karam Mohd goal. Samuel Kim’s 62nd-minute goal finally put the New Jersey side ahead for the first time and put the finishing touches on an impressive comeback.

15U Boys
Osiel Magana Nieves and MI Rangers FC Elite 64 10B (MI) proved too much to handle for in-state foe Michigan Tigers Elite 64 10B (MI) in the 15U Boys final. Nieves wasted no time getting his name on the scoresheet, scoring the game’s opening goal in the third minute. The Tigers leveled the game shortly after, but Nieves’ determination was more than they could handle. He added two more before the 32nd minute to cap off a first-half hat trick, and Massimo Mancini added the Rangers’ fourth in the 74th minute to cap off a decisive win in the champions pool title game.

16U Boys
A strong defensive performance helped lead Galaxy SC 09B Elite 64 (IL) over City SC Utah Elite 64 09B (UT), 1-0, in the 16U champions pool final. The Illinois side was no stranger to grinding out games after needing to overcome a scoreless penalty shootout to reach the final, so they were up for another test. Galaxy took the lead in the 38th minute off a Gavin Brown goal and stifled all City SC Utah chances from there to earn another hard-fought win.

17U Boys
A back-and-forth 17U Boys final required penalties to decide the winner, as Steel City FC Elite 64 08B (PA-W) outlasted PDA Hibernian Elite 64 08B (NJ) to claim the champions pool title. PDA grabbed an 18th-minute lead behind a Jayden Maxwell goal, but Steel City responded just 10 minutes later when Nicholas Niebauer slid his shot inside the right post to level the score. Both sides generated chances across the final hour of gameplay but a winning goal never developed. Steel City keeper Mason Smith made a key save in the shootout, and Sean Regan netted the deciding penalty to help the PA West side secure the title.

19U Boys
Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 06/07B (NJ) scored two late goals to fuel a 2-2 (5-3 PK) comeback win against Toca FC 07B Elite 64 (KS) in the 19U Boys champions pool final. Toca opened the scoring when Bernardo Dickmann found the back of the net in the 26th minute, and the Kansas side doubled its lead in the 62nd minute with a goal from Kevin De Andrade. Cedar Stars continued to work the ball around the field and finally broke through the organized Toca defense in the 76th minute, when Raymond Diouf followed up his own attempt and knocked the rebound into an open net. Just minutes later, Amadou Hann converted a penalty kick to level the game and send the teams to a penalty kick shootout. In the shootout, Alpha Bah converted the final penalty for Cedar Stars to help the New Jersey side win the final.

NL Quarterfinals (January) – Boys Preview

The boys wrap up the National League Quarterfinals when more than 160 Elite 64 teams travel to Mesa, Ariz., to compete Jan. 17-21 at the Arizona Athletic Grounds. Each age group features a champions pool, where teams will play in a tournament format to determine the event champion. In the 14U-19U age groups, teams in every pool are also playing for qualifying spots into the February 2025 National League Semifinals, where teams will compete for a chance to advance to the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

While teams in the 13U age group will see a champions pool winner crowned, the Quarterfinals primarily serve as an opportunity to earn seeding points for next season’s events. There is no semifinal advancement in the 13U age group.

Take a look at some of the teams, games and players to watch in the 14U-19U Boys age groups during the National League Quarterfinals in January.

14U Boys

Toca FC Elite 64 11B (KS) had one of the most potent offensive showings of any team during its first year in Elite 64 last season. The Kansas side scored 82 goals in its 14 Elite 64 Midwest games to claim the 2023-24 division title and position itself in the champions pool in Mesa. Toca will be ready for the challenge as it is once again in good form with a 2-0-0 record to start league play this season.

Another team from the Elite 64 Midwest with something to prove in the champions pool, Elmbrook United Elite 64 11B (WI) finished two games off of Toca in 2023-24 but had an impressive season of its own. It also holds a high-scoring offense — one that found the back of the net 51 times — and is primed to show what it can do on the national stage.

In the Elite 64 Northeast, Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 11B (NJ) also scored 51 goals last season en route to its first place finish in the division. The New Jersey side finished 13-1-0 behind its balanced team play and should be considered a real threat in the champions pool in Mesa after its 5-0-0 start to this season.Indy Premier Elite 64 11B (IN) is yet another Elite 64 division winner ready to make noise at the quarterfinals. Finishing on top of a competitive 2023-24 Great Lakes division will prove valuable for the Indiana side, as it will find itself in multiple competitive games in the champions pool.

Day 1 Game to Watch

Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 11B (NJ) will have its hands full with a talented Galaxy SC Elite 64 2011B(IL) side that finished in third place in the Elite 64 Midwest last season. Galaxy’s impressive run was overshadowed by the two teams in front of them, so Cedar Stars will need to be on high alert with a trip to February’s Semifinals up for grabs.

15U Boys

Toca FC Elite 64 10B (KS) needed every point during its 11-0-3, undefeated run through the Elite 64 Midwest last season to hold off Elmbrook United Elite 64 10B (WI) and take the division title. The experience gained from a title race — one full of close games — may give Toca a leg up on the other teams in the champions pool in Mesa.

Michigan Tigers Elite 64 10B (MI) and MI Rangers FC Elite 64 10B (MI) are no stranger to close finishes, either. The Michigan sides finished second and third, respectively, in the Elite 64 Great Lakes last season, but by no more than two points off the leaders. Both will head to Mesa with their eyes set on getting over the hump and finishing on top of the champions pool.Miami Breakers FC Elite 64 10B (FL) heads to the quarterfinals in top form. The Florida side has opened up Elite 64 Southeast play with a 7-0-0 record behind an offense that’s tallied 30 goals and a defense intent on stifling every opponent. Miami is a team that looks primed to break through the wildcard pool.

Day 1 Game to Watch

Two teams currently undefeated and sitting in first place of their Elite 64 divisions — Toca FC 10B Elite 64 (KS) of the Midwest and MI Rangers FC Elite 64 10B (MI) of the Great Lakes — go head to head on the first day of action in Mesa. All eyes should be on this matchup with a Semifinals spot on the line.

16U Boys

The 2023-24 Elite 64 Midwest winners, Madison 56ers Elite 64 09B (WI), head to Mesa as a team to watch in the champions pool. An impressive end-of-season run that saw the Wisconsin side rack up seven straight wins and outscore its opponents by 17 shows they can get hot at the right time.

City SC Utah (UT) is another team at the quarterfinals to keep an eye on. En route to its first-place finish in the Elite 64 Northwest last season, City SC put its offense on full display by scoring three or more goals in half of its games and tallying 28 goals overall. If they can keep up that pace, they’ll be a tough team to beat in the champions pool. Two more teams to keep an eye on, PDA SC Vistula Elite 64 09B (NJ) and STA MOSC Elite 64 09B (NJ) hail from the Elite 64 Northeast. Vistula edged Mount Olive by one point to claim the division title, but the two teams split results throughout the season to show how evenly matched they were. With both scoring more than 40 goals during division play last season, either of the New Jersey sides are strong enough to come out on top of the champions pool in Mesa.

Day 1 Game to Watch

A tough defense to break down will meet a high-scoring offense on Day 1, when 2023-24 division winners Madison 56ers Elite 64 09B (WI) and PDA SC Vistula Elite 64 09B (NJ) match up. The 56ers gave up only nine goals throughout Elite 64 Midwest action last season but will need to be ready early against a Vistula offense that averaged 3.3 goals per game in the Elite 64 Northeast a year ago.

With pace and movement to find open spaces, Simmons can be a terror for opposing defenders. His consistent play has helped him stand out in Elite 64 regular season games and at national events.

17U Boys

Toca FC Elite 64 08B (KS) and Galaxy SC Elite 64 08B (IL) are plenty familiar with each other after going head-to-head for the Elite 64 Midwest division crown last season. Toca came out on top by a six-point margin, but both will head to Mesa ready for the moment. This also marks the first step for both teams as they make another run at the National Championship. The two division foes faced off in the semifinals last year, with Galaxy coming out on top in penalty kicks.

Cedar Stars Academy Elite 64 08B (NJ) went 11-2-1 in Elite 64 Northeast play last season to earn its spot in the champions pool at the quarterfinals. The New Jersey side’s overall balance will be tough for teams to contend with, making CSA a team to watch in Mesa. Finishing in second place just behind them, PDA Hibernian Elite 64 08B (NJ) narrowly lost both contests to Cedar Stars by one-goal margins but proved it can compete with the best. PDA Hibernian should be taken seriously in Mesa. Another team that finished in second place of its division last season, Ohio Galaxies FC Elite 64 08B (OH) seems ready to change that outcome this year. The Ohio side is off to a 5-0-0 start in Great Lakes action and will be a team no one wants to face in the champions pool.

Day 1 Game to Watch

With a trip to the Semifinals on the line, Steel City FC Elite 64 08B (PA-W) and Toca FC Elite 64 08B (KS) square off on Day 1 in Mesa. Both teams should be ready from the start after claiming division titles last season, and the winner of this one should gain plenty of confidence moving forward.

Nicholas Niebauer (Forward – Steel City FC)
Niebauer impacts the game in multiple ways. He can act as the first line of defense by initiating a high press that troubles opposing center backs. And when he gets his chances, he’s capable of finding the back of the net.

Alexander F Leon (Goalkeeper – Cedar Stars Academy)
Superb lateral agility helps Leon’s save-making ability range from post to post. Over the course of the last couple Elite 64 seasons, he’s denied opponents on several shots that appeared bound for goal.

19U Boys

Sixty-four goals during Elite 64 Northeast play propelled PDA SC Vistula Elite 64 06/07B (NJ) to the division title last season. That goal-per-game ratio of 4.6 led it to an 11-1-2 record and proved too much for opponents to handle. If Vistula shows up to Mesa with its shooting boots, it can do damage in the champions pool.

Galaxy SC Elite 64 07B (IL) will be ready for the thin margins that champions pool play can bring about after last season. The Illinois side came out on top of a difficult 2023-24 Elite 64 Midwest slate with a 10-2-1 record and was frequently involved in one-score games. The ability to play under pressure will be important in Mesa, so keep an eye out for Galaxy.

Toca FC Elite 64 07B (KS) finished just behind Galaxy in the Midwest division but showed its ability while running the table at the National Championships. It won all five games in Orlando and gave up just one goal in the process. Toca will have a target on its back at the quarterfinals.

Don’t forget about Ohio Galaxies FC Elite 64 07B (OH), either. One year after a first-place finish in the Elite 64 Great Lakes, Galaxies is looking for more and sits 4-0-1 in the early part of division play this season. With 14 goals already, they’re looking to surpass the 40 they scored in 2023-24 action. Teams in the champions pool should be cautious of their goal-scoring ability.

Day 1 Game to Watch

A clash of styles is in order early in Mesa. Reigning national champions and the defensively stout Toca FC Elite 64 07B (KS) will hope it can slow down the dynamic offense of PDA SC Vistula Elite 64 06/07B (NJ) on Day 1, with the winner heading to the National League Semifinals.

Girls NL Quarterfinals see 45 teams advance to February 2025 NL Semifinals

MESA, Ariz. (Jan. 13, 2025) — Four exciting days of action at the USYS National League Quarterfinals in Mesa, Ariz., saw 45 girls teams qualify for the February 2025 National League Semifinals, while six sides claimed titles as the winners of the champions pool in their age group.

This January quarterfinals featured primarily teams from Elite 64, the top club-based platform in the USYS National League. The Jan. 10-13 action took place at Arizona Athletic Grounds and featured more than 125 girls teams across the 13U-19U age groups.

21-23 in Round Rock, Texas, for a chance to qualify to the National Championships.

Thirteen different USYS State Association saw teams advance out of this weekend’s quarterfinals. Wisconsin and Michigan led the way, as they each saw 10 teams qualify for the NL Semifinals during play from this event.

“Every game we’re working hard and trying to win, but this really gives us something to work toward,” Legends FC Elite 64 06/07G (MI) goalkeeper Sarah Marsac said after her team earned a National League Semifinals berth. “We feel like we’re earning something when we win our games, and we’re really working hard to get that spot [in the Semifinals].”

In addition to earning a place in the semifinals, six teams also won the tournament competition within the champions pool of their respective age groups to claim event titles.

Elmbrook United and Madison 56ers led the way, as the two Wisconsin clubs each secured two champions pool titles. Across the six age groups, Elmbrook United had four teams advance to the finals in the champions pool.

Giuliano Oliviero, a director of coaching at Elmbrook United, said he was proud of their whole girls program and the consistency their players showed from age group to age group. He also noted the value of a successful weekend at the National League Quarterfinals.

“You want to win every game you play in, and that’s the mentality the girls have and the effort they showed up with,” Oliviero said of the EBU 10G side after it claimed the club’s first champions pool title. “To go 3-0-0 and earn a top spot heading into Texas in February for the Semifinals puts us in a really great spot. We’ll continue to prepare and be ready for the Semifinals next month.”

TITLE GAME RECAPS…

13U Girls
Elmbrook United 12G Elite 64 (WI) powered its way to the champions pool title behind an offensive avalanche. Its 5-0 win over KC Legends Elite 64 12G (KS) was never in question, as Kyra Patterson’s eighth-minute goal put her team in the driver’s seat early. Patterson added her second off a rebound during first-half stoppage time to give her Wisconsin side even more momentum heading into the break. From there, it was the Khloe Bacon show. Bacon’s sizzling second-half hat trick — all coming in a span of 10 minutes — put the game out of reach and sealed the win for Elmbrook.

14U Girls
Madison 56ers Elite 64 11G (WI) capped off a stout defensive weekend with a third straight shutout in the champions pool final. Facing in-state foe Elmbrook United 11G Elite 64 (WI), the 56ers once again put their defensive skill on display to shut out a team that had scored seven goals heading into the match — but this one needed penalties to be decided. Madison keeper Alana Curley continued her stellar event by making two saves in the shootout, and Corbi Grinch played the hero by converting the decisive penalty kick to clinch the game for the 56ers.

15U Girls
Elmbrook United 10G Elite 64’s (WI) commanding 3-0 win over Madison 56ers Elite 64 10G (WI) in the champions pool final was a reflection of its weekend at the quarterfinals. The Wisconsin side scored a combined eight goals in its first two games in Mesa and came into the final red hot. Elmbrook’s Lydia Presti wasted no time putting her team in front, catching the 56ers off guard and scoring in the second minute. Dylan Szesterniak headed in the team’s second just nine minutes later, and Olivia Rameker added one more for insurance in the 49th minute to cap of a title-winning weekend for Elmbrook.

16U Girls
Charlotte SA Elite 64 09G (NC) clinched the champions pool title over Elmbrook United 09G Elite 64 (WI) behind timely goals and a clinical defensive performance. Samia Margherio broke the deadlock early, scoring in the 10th minute and putting Charlotte ahead. That margin held for the next 70 minutes until Shradha Kathirvel found the back of the net and iced the game for the North Carolina side. Elmbrook — which came into the final scoring five goals in each of its first two games in Mesa — had put the Charlotte defense under intense pressure for most of the second half, but it could find no answer against the fortified unit.

17U Girls
WNY Flash Rochester Elite 64 08G’s (NY-W) late game heroics helped it complete a comeback win over Michigan Tigers Elite 64 08G (MI) in the champions pool final. The Tigers struck first in this one, with Ayla Tindall opening the scoresheet in the 22nd minute, but it took just 10 minutes for the Flash to level the game again behind a Savanna Biehler goal. The Tigers snuck into the break up one, though, as Maya Borgsdorf’s stoppage-time strike put her team in the driver’s seat with 45 minutes gone. The Michigan side did its best to hold on for the win, but WNY Flash’s Alexis Olson leveler in the 87th minute sent this final to a penalty shootout. Once there, Addison Tally made multiple saves to seal the win for the New York side.

19U Girls
Madison 56ers Elite 64 06/07G (WI) topped Steel City FC Elite 64 06/07G (PA-W) 1-0 in a very competitive champions pool final. While both sides traded chances throughout the game’s opening period, it was scoreless at the break with neither team able to capitalize. It took until the 66th minute for the deadlock to be broken, with Madison’s Nola Maughan putting her team in front for good. The 56ers defense did the rest from there, with the backline holding strong and Reese McCabe making timely saves to preserve the shutout win.

The Kansas side compiled a perfect 6-0-0 record in Elite 64 play last season, and it won all three of its games at its national event in Florida. With the team coming off an unbeaten fall in the Elite 64 Regional League, KC Legends will aim to continue its winning ways when it competes in the champions pool in Mesa.

A pair of teams from the Elite 64 Midwest will be ones to watch at the quarterfinals. Elmbrook United 11G Elite 64 (WI) won the division last season, as it went 13-2-3 to outlast Michigan Tigers Elite 64 11G (MI) by one point in the standings. The division race repeated itself in Fall 2024, as EBU used a two-point edge over the Tigers to finish atop the standings. Madison 56ers Elite 64 11G (WI) finished just behind the top two in both of those seasons and is another team that could make some noise in Arizona.

Like the Midwest trio, West-Mont United Elite 64 11G (PA-E) took part in a tight race in its Elite 64 division last season, as it went 11-2-1 during a second-place campaign. If its high-scoring attack travels to Arizona, West-Mont will be a challenge for opposing defenses at the quarterfinals.

Day 1 Game to Watch

Coming off similar seasons in 2023-24, West-Mont United Elite 64 11G (PA-E) and Madison 56ers Elite 64 11G (WI) could be in a nailbiter when they face off on Jan. 11. A spot in the National League Semifinals will be up for grabs, so players from both sides will need to be on top of their game from the first whistle.

The challenge of a national event is nothing new to Elmbrook United 10G Elite 64 (WI). The Wisconsin side followed up a solid third-place campaign in last season’s Elite 64 Midwest by winning all seven games at its two national events to punch its ticket to the National Championships. EBU, which won the Elite 64 Midwest during the Fall 2024 season, will look to continue its winning ways when it competes in Arizona.

WNY Flash Rochester Elite 64 10G (NY-W) showed a formidable team mentality during its second-place showing in last season’s Elite 64 Great Lakes standings. WNY Flash’s 8-3-0 record was fueled by four low-scoring games decided by a single goal, plus four shutouts — showing it may be difficult for opponents in Mesa to break through against the New York side.

Like WNY Flash, Madison 56ers Elite 64 10G (WI) also finished second in its Elite 64 division last season. Eight wins and eight draws from its 18 games helped Madison finish one spot ahead of EBU in the Midwest standings, and the 56ers will aim to regain that form in hopes of making a run in the champions pool at the quarterfinals.

In the silver pool, TFA Elite 64 10G (OH) could be a team to watch, as the Ohio side is off to a 3-0-0 start in Elite 64 Great Lakes play this season. TFA has outscored opponents, 10-to-1, in those games.

Day 1 Game to Watch

The pristine event record owned by Elmbrook United 10G Elite 64 (WI) could be put to the test in a Jan. 11 matchup against Charlotte SA Elite 64 10G (NC). While EBU has plenty of recent success on its resume, CSA is also entering the quarterfinals in solid form, as the North Carolina side went 8-2-0 during the Fall 2024 portion of its Elite 64 schedule. This could be an exciting game that determines a berth to the National League Semifinals.

Charlotte SA Elite 64 09G (NC) leads a strong group of Elite 64 division winners from a season ago that are set to compete in the champions pool in Mesa. CSA went 10-0-0 to win the Elite 64 Southeast in 2023-24, and it has remained perfect this season while posting an 11-0-0 mark in league play. Charlotte qualified for the National Championships via the National League last season, and it will now aim to begin a journey back to that stage.

Meanwhile, Elmbrook United 09G Elite 64 (WI) has been equally impressive in the Elite 64 Midwest, which it won with an 11-0-1 record last season. EBU followed up that performance by going 12-0-0 in Elite 64 action in Fall 2024, so it has plenty of confidence entering the quarterfinals. Steel City FC Elite 64 09G (PA-W) will be another team looking to build off a first-place campaign in 2023-24, when it won the Elite 64 Great Lakes using a combination of the division’s top-scoring attack and a defense that conceded less than a goal per game.

Michigan Tigers Elite 64 09G (MI) finished second to EBU in Elite 64 regular season action the last two seasons, but few teams could match the Tigers’ performance at national events in 2023-24. The Michigan side won all eight of its games at the events to qualify for the National Championships, and it will look to have similar success in the champions pool in Arizona.

Day 1 Game to Watch

Charlotte SA Elite 64 09G (NC)’s pursuit of another berth to Nationals will face an immediate test on Jan. 10 against Club Ohio Elite 64 09G (OH). While CSA has won back-to-back Elite 64 titles in the Southeast, Club Ohio is coming off a strong second-place showing in the league in 2023-24, and it’s currently leading the Elite 64 Great Lakes standings after a quick start this season. It’s anyone’s guess as to which side will punch its ticket to Texas in this matchup.

A stellar record over the past 16 months has Michigan Tigers Elite 64 08G (MI) looking like a very challenging matchup for any champions pool opponent in Mesa. The Tigers went 10-0-2 to win the Elite 64 Midwest last season, and they bettered that record to 12-0-2 during another first-place campaign in Fall 2024. Coupled with wins in six of their seven games at national events last season, the Tigers have shown they can earn results in various competitions.

FW United Elite 64 08G (IN) has a similarly impressive recent resume. The Indiana side won the Elite 64 Great Lakes last season, and its success at the national events allowed it to advance directly to the National Championships. FW United came up two goals short while finishing as the national runner-up, and the team will now aim to use the quarterfinals as the starting point to another run toward claiming the National Championship.

The team that finished just behind FW United in the Great Lakes last season — WNY Flash Rochester Elite 64 08G (NY-W) — also held its own quite well at the national events in 2023-24, and that experience could make it a tough challenge this year in Mesa.

Meanwhile, JB Marine Gold 08G (MO) and West-Mont United Elite 64 08G (PA-E) each secured first-place finishes in their Elite 64 divisions last season, indicating they have the ability to make a run at the champions pool title during action in Arizona.

Day 1 Game to Watch

The Jan. 10 matchup between JB Marine Gold 08G (MO) and West-Mont United Elite 64 08G (PA-E) will determine a berth to the National League Semifinals, and if past results are any indication, this could be a very close contest. West-Mont conceded just 0.3 goals per game in Elite 64 play last season, while JB Marine was even stingier — allowing just 0.25 goals per game. The team that can break through first and control the tempo may be the one that ultimately secures the win.

With a first-place showing as a 17U side in the Elite 64 Great Lakes last season, FW United Elite 64 06/07G (IN) heads to Mesa as a team to watch in the champions pool. Several players from FW United’s 19U side that advanced to the final at the 2024 National Championships are back and bring big-game experience that could give the Indiana side an edge in pressure-filled situations.

Charlotte SA Elite 64 06/07G (NC) will also present a challenge for opponents, as it won the Elite 64 Southeast in 2023-24. Charlotte’s defense helped power its success, as it conceded just five goals in eight games.

Similar showings last season have set up Madison 56ers Elite 64 06/07G (WI) and Steel City FC Elite 64 06/07G (PA-W) with chances to make some waves in the champions pool. Each side finished second in its respective Elite 64 division last season, with identical 7-3-2 records. Madison followed that by winning the Elite 64 Midwest in Fall 2024, so it will have plenty of confidence entering the games in Mesa.

Teams cannot overlook MI Rangers FC Elite 64 06/07G (MI), which returns 14 players from its 2024 19U USYS National Championship team, including Golden Ball and Golden Boot winner Ava Lutke.

Day 1 Game to Watch

Two teams coming off red hot fall seasons will match up on Jan. 10 when Madison 56ers Elite 64 06/07G (WI) takes on Indy Eleven Elite 64 06/07G (IN). The 56ers went 10-0-2 to finish in first place in the Elite 64 Midwest. Meanwhile, Indy Eleven is off to a 4-0-0 start in its Elite 64 Great Lakes schedule and has yet to concede a goal. It wouldn’t be surprising if this one came down to the final minutes or needed penalties to determine a winner.

Girls complete thrilling weekend at NL Quarterfinals in Arizona

Teams will compete for berths to Nationals at National League Semifinals

Schedules & Results

MESA, Ariz. (Dec. 16, 2024) — Four exciting days of action at the USYS National League Quarterfinals in Mesa, Ariz., saw 68 girls teams earn their place in the next stage of national events — the National League Semifinals.

The latest girls’ quarterfinal took place Dec. 13-16 and included teams primarily from the National League Conferences and the Elite 64 Regional League. Teams competed in group play, with the groups designated as part of either a red or blue pathway.

Teams that advanced out of red groups will move on to the first semifinal event in February 2025 in Round Rock, Texas. Teams that advanced out of blue groups will move on to the second semifinal event in May 2025 in Oceanside, Calif. At each semifinal, teams will compete for berths to the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

“Last year, we were successful enough to get to the National Championships and made it to the final match,” said Columbus United G11 Lions (OH) coach Nikki Thorne, whose team secured a spot in the National League Semifinals. “Getting the opportunity to come here and start the journey again at the National League Quarterfinals — and getting the opportunity to try to get back to the National Championship — is huge. To get back there is ultimately the goal.”

Nationals Union 06G Black (MI) was the lone defending National Champion to advance to the National League Semifinals from the games this weekend in Arizona. Additionally, 2024 National Finalists Columbus United G10 Lions (OH) and Columbus United G11 Lions (OH) each won all of their games in Mesa to advance to the National League Semifinals.

Michigan led all USYS State Associations with nine teams that advanced to the National League Semifinals during the girls weekend in Arizona. Ohio and North Texas each had eight teams advance, South Texas saw five teams move on, and Maryland and Eastern Pennsylvania each had four teams qualify for the next stage of events.

The teams moving on to the National League Semifinals will do so with their sights set on qualifying for the 2025 USYS National Championships. For some squads, that’s a goal that’s been years in the making.

“We’ve been working hard all year, and this is one step forward,” said Melania Turano, a center back and forward for South Shore FC Legacy G09 (NY-E). “Coming here is great. We play a bunch of great teams from all over and get to showcase our talent. And work toward the common goal of getting back to Nationals this season.”

NL Quarterfinals (December) – Girls Preview

The girls continue the National League Quarterfinals when more than 110 teams travel to Mesa, Ariz., to compete Dec. 13-16 at the Arizona Athletic Grounds. (View schedule)

The December quarterfinals feature teams primarily from the National League Conferences and Elite 64 Regional League. The 14U-19U age groups will be in action, with teams competing in a group play format. After three days of competition, the top two finishers from each four-team group will secure advancement to the National League Semifinals. In some age groups, one or more third-place finishers may also secure a spot in the semifinals.

Advancing teams move on to one of two National League Semifinal events. Teams advancing out of quarterfinal groups designated on the red pathway will move on to the first semifinal event in February 2025 in Round Rock, Texas. Teams advancing out of quarterfinal groups designated on the blue pathway will advance to the second semifinal event in May 2025 in Oceanside, Calif. At each semifinal, teams will compete against top teams from the Conferences, Elite 64 and Elite 64 Regional League, to determine which sides advance to the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

Take a look at some of the girls teams to watch in each of the groups at the National League Quarterfinals in December.

14U Girls

Group A

Coming off a 9-0-0 campaign last season in the Great Lakes Conference, Impact GFC G11 (OH) will be a difficult challenge for all opponents in Mesa. The Ohio side got it done on both ends, as it averaged four goals per game while conceding just four total across its nine league matches. It will need to contend with HTX 11 N (TX-S), which will be full of confidence after winning the 2024 USYS National Championship.

Group B

Eastside Timbers 11G Red (OR) won every game in the Northwest Conference last season, as it finished in first place. With 1-0 results against teams that finished just behind them, the Timbers showed they can grind out victories in challenging games.

Group C

Maryland Rush Azzurri 11G (MD) picked up points in all eight of its South Atlantic Conference games this past spring, as it finished on top of the standings with a 4-0-4 record. Meanwhile, Galaxy 11G (IL) combined for a 9-0-3 record across the fall and spring seasons in 2023-24, as it finished in first place in the Midwest Conference.

Group D

Despite a second-place finish last season in the North Atlantic Conference, Stony Brook Force G11 (NY-E) produced the division’s lone unbeaten record, as it went 6-0-2 while conceding a league-low two goals. Midwest United FC SCOR Elite 64 11G (MI) also used a near-impenetrable defense to record an unbeaten season in 2023-24, as it allowed just one goal during a first-place campaign in the Midwest division of the Elite 64 Regional League.

US YOUTH SOCCER ODP PLAYERS

Group A

PPA 10G Green (MD) secured five shutouts last season in the South Atlantic Conference, as it won its division with a 7-1-1 record. Utah Surf 10 Sasaki Blue (UT) was equally impressive in its first-place Desert Conference campaign, as it went 6-0-1 in 2023-24. Both sides will be ones to watch when play kicks off in Mesa.

Group B

High-leverage games are nothing new for PSA Monmouth 10G (NJ), which won last season’s Mid Atlantic Conference by one point. The New Jersey side went 7-0-2, and a 1-0 win in its final game allowed it to finish atop the standings. That experience could prove valuable during the action at the quarterfinals.

Group C

Miami Breakers FC 10G Black (FL) used an unbeaten campaign in 2023-24 to finish first in its division in the Sunshine Conference. Miami used a combination of offensive outbursts and strong defensive performances to earn its results, and that diversity in play will make it a challenging team to face in Arizona.

Group D

With a proven ability to earn tough results, last season’s Frontier Conference winner, Georgetown SA Force FC 10G White (TX-S), will be a team to watch in Arizona. Four of Force’s six conference wins came by just one goal. Piedmont Conference winner Savannah United 10G Premier (GA), on the other hand, used a potent offensive attack to secure its first-place finish in 2023-24 and put in a repeat performance earlier this season.

Group E

Columbus United G10 Lions (OH) will travel to Arizona with plenty of confidence after a very strong 2023-24 season in the Great Lakes Conference. Columbus went 9-0-0 in the 2024 Spring, as it scored 28 goals and conceded just two during a first-place campaign. PASS FC 10G NL (MI) was another Spring 2024 division winner, as it finished on top of the Midwest Conference standings. PASS needed to grind out some results, which will be valuable experience to have in Mesa.

Group F

SLSG 10G Elite Navy (MO) went 11-2-1 in 2023-24 during a first-place performance in the Midwest division of the Elite 64 Regional League. Meanwhile, Solar South 10G Adames FDL (TX-N) compiled a 13-0-3 record while winning its FDL division. They’ll be challenged against Galaxy SC 10 NL (IL), which won the 2024 USYS National Championship.

Group A

An undefeated season in the Mid South Conference last season helped Kononia SC Lady Fire (TN) to a second-place finish. Kononia followed its 6-0-2 league campaign by finishing as the runner-up at the 2024 USYS Southern Regionals, so it will have its sights set on an elusive first-place finish when it heads to Mesa.

Group B

Sound FC G09 A (WA) has experienced the importance of every goal, as it used a goal differential tiebreaker to win last season’s Northwest Conference. That experience should help in Arizona, where little can separate the teams in group play.

Group C

Coming off a dominant showing in last season’s Frontier Conference, FIERCE 09G (TX-S) will be a tough team to contend with at the quarterfinals. The South Texas side is in even better form this year, as it finished the fall season in first place without conceding a goal during an 8-0-0 run in the Frontier Conference.

Group D

South Shore FC Legacy G09 (NY-E) won last season’s North Atlantic Conference, as it posted the most goals scored in its division while conceding the fewest. That strength on both ends of the field will be tested against Solar South 09G Naizer FDL (TX-N), which went 14-0-2 to win the Frontier Development League in 2023-24.

Group E

Four straight wins to finish the 2023-24 campaign helped Rush WI 09G Rush (WI) win the Midwest Conference. That experience will be beneficial during the high-pressure games in Mesa. Utah Surf 09G Cheshire (UT) also brings a strong resume to Arizona, as the club went 7-0-0 last season in the Desert Conference.

Group F

St. Croix 09G Academy NL (MN) heads to Mesa after finishing a grueling first-place campaign during the 2023-24 season in the Great Lakes division of the Elite 64 Regional League. St. Croix went 7-1-1, and every goal proved impactful, as its plus-33 goal differential provided the deciding factor in a tiebreaker atop the standings.

A high-powered attack fueled a strong showing during the 2023-24 season for Ambassadors FC 08G (OH), as it won the Great Lakes Conference while averaging more than five goals per game. The Ohio side is looking to begin a journey back to the USYS National Championships, where it narrowly missed a berth to the semifinals last season.

Group B

Renegades 08G FDL (TX-N) finished in first place in the Frontier Development League last season, as it went 14-3-1. After showing it can sustain strong play over a long season, the North Texas side will look to excel during the three days in Arizona.

Group C

Solar FDL 08G Hernandez (TX-N) finished second in last season’s Frontier Development League, while recording the division’s top goal differential. Meanwhile, PCU 08G Red 1 (OR) won the Northwest Conference in 2023-24, when it conceded just one goal. Both teams will be ones to watch when play kicks off in Mesa.

Group D

Big games are nothing new to 1776 United FC 08G Orange (PA-E), which jumped to the top of last season’s Mid Atlantic Conference standings with a 2-1 win in its final game. That victory came against the then division leader, so 1776 United can recall that accomplishment if it finds itself in a similar situation during group play at the quarterfinals.

Group E

Galaxy 08G (IL) will hope to reclaim the dominant form that helped it win last season’s Midwest Conference. The Illinois side boasted the division’s top offense during that campaign, as it averaged more than five goals per game while going 6-0-0.

Group F

Villarreal NTX 08G (TX-N) will be a tough challenge for opponents in Arizona. The Frontier Conference champions from 2023-24 outscored opponents 29-to-9 while going 6-1-1.

An overpowering performance from start to finish saw Solar South 06/07G Adames FDL (TX-N) go 13-0-1 to win the Frontier Development League in 2023-24. It will certainly be a challenge for the opposition in Mesa, but the same can be said for NYCFC 07/08G South (NY-E). The New York side won every game last season to finish in first place in the North Atlantic Conference.

Group B

In last season’s Sunshine Conference, IMG Premier Girls (FL) scored the most goals and conceded the fewest en route to winning the division with a 12-1-1 record. IMG will need to contend with Manitou FC 07G (MN), the winner of the Elite 64 Regional League’s Great Lakes division last season. Manitou secured two 3-1 victories to take first place after its first seven league matches were decided by one goal or fewer.

Group C

FC Dallas ETX 07G Premier (TX-N) came away with nine wins from its nine games in the Frontier Conference last season. During that first-place campaign, FC Dallas scored at least four goals in every game, so opposition defenses in Arizona will need to be on high alert.

Group D

Having to outlast a handful of teams in the standings is nothing new to Nationals Union 06G Black (MI), and it will look to do just that in Mesa. The Michigan side won the Midwest division of the Elite 64 Regional League last season, and it did so by coming out on top of a three-way tie. It followed that by winning several close games in July to claim the USYS National Championship, and the quarterfinals could serve as a starting point in that title defense.

Group E

An unbeaten run in the Midwest Conference in 2023-24 helped TKO Premier SC 06/07G Blue (MI) to finish in first place. TKO compiled a 6-0-1 record, with four of its wins coming by one goal.

Group F

Savannah United 07G Premier (GA) won the Piedmont Conference in 2023-24 by going 8-0-2. It showed its offense could take over in some dominant wins, while Savannah also grinded out some close results — an ability that could be useful when the team heads to Arizona.

MESA, Ariz. (Dec. 9, 2024) — Four exciting days of action at the USYS National League Quarterfinals in Mesa, Ariz., saw 116 boys teams earn their place in the next stage of national events — the National League Semifinals.

The latest boys’ quarterfinal took place Dec. 6-9 and included teams primarily from the National League Conferences and the Elite 64 Regional League.

At the semifinals, teams will compete for a chance to qualify for the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

The long-standing focus of the National League’s team-based format is to allow any team — no matter the club’s size or background — to earn their place in the highest levels of competition based on their play on the field. That’s what 19U Boys side PYSC 07B Orange (NY-E) has done, as it looks to make a name for its club on the national stage.

“I think this is a beautiful environment… We know every game is a tough game, and the players have to show up and fight with everything on the line,” PYSC coach Hamad Sanni said. “We’re from Brooklyn, N.Y. The majority of our kids are black and Hispanic kids from lower income neighborhoods. We’ve really focused on character development over the years, and now we’re coming out and showing our level — that we have real talent at our club.”

The boys teams advancing from the December Quarterfinals to the National League Semifinals come from 35 different USYS State Associations. Illinois led the way with 15 teams that are moving on to the next stage of events, while Florida followed with 11 advancing teams. Michigan and Ohio each have eight teams moving on, and Eastern New York has seven.

All four defending National Champions that competed this weekend in Arizona secured a place in their respective semifinal events. Those teams — The Football Academy NJ 11B Black (NJ), Ponys F.C. 2010 (IL), Aspire FC 09B Black (TX-S) and Utah Celtic 08B E64 Bradley (UT) — each won their quarterfinal group during the action in Mesa.

With tickets punched to the National League Semifinals, teams can begin to set their sights on securing a berth to the 2025 National Championships. With the competitiveness of the National League, some players know they can’t look too far ahead. “That’s what we want — we want the National Championship,” said MI Stars 2010B midfielder Olen Klumpp. “I think we just need to focus on one step at a time. Every game matters more than the next in our heads.”
